  1. Install the Mac app

Translation uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition and translation. Install Private Video Translate in Applications.

Requires an Apple silicon Mac, macOS 26 or later and Chrome 116 or later.

The Mac download is not published yet. For this preview, install the supplied Mac app ZIP.

  2. Open the Mac app once

It connects to this extension automatically. Once connected, start translation from Chrome.

Already installed but not connecting? Open the Mac app and choose Connect extension or Reconnect extension, then check the connection above.

  3. Prepare your languages

Download translation languages in System Settings → General → Language & Region → Translation Languages.

Tab audio also needs a speech model for the spoken language. The extension offers Download speech model when it is missing. Video captions do not need a speech model.

    • Translate a video

Open a video in Chrome and click the extension. Open Translation languages to refresh downloaded models, choose source and target languages, then select Start translation.

Pin the extension using Chrome’s extensions menu for easy access. Use Stop translation to end a session. After restarting Chrome or your Mac, start a new session from the extension.
