What the app processes
Private Video Translate consists of a Chrome extension and a local Mac companion. When you start Tab audio, Chrome captures audio from the selected tab, including other audible content in that tab. The microphone is not captured. The audio is passed to Apple’s speech recognition engine on your Mac; recognized text is translated locally with Apple’s translation engine.
In Video captions mode, the extension reads source subtitle text and timing from browser-exposed caption tracks or the YouTube caption integration. The text is passed to the local Mac companion for translation. The extension checks the selected tab’s URL and visible player to locate the video and choose the caption integration. It does not retain a browsing history. Selected languages, caption timing and connection status are used to control the session.
The extension and companion do not upload audio, recognized speech or subtitle text to a cloud translation service. This preview does not save audio recordings or caption transcripts to disk.
What remains on your device
- Selected source and target languages and subtitle positioning are stored locally by the extension.
- The Mac app stores connection preferences and native helper registration files on your Mac.
- Audio buffers, recognized phrases, subtitle queues and translation caches are held in memory for the session. Stopping or ending the session releases that session state.
- Apple’s language and speech models are installed and managed as system resources.
Removing the extension removes its local preferences. The Mac app’s Disconnect action removes the registrations it owns; removing the app may leave its stored macOS preferences. Downloaded Apple language models are managed separately through macOS.
When internet access is used
Your video website still delivers its video, audio and captions under its own privacy policy. The YouTube adapter may request caption data from YouTube. Apple language and speech model downloads need network access. These requests are separate from local speech recognition and translation.
The current preview has no payment, activation or application analytics integration. It does not send usage reports, caption contents or audio to an analytics service. Any future payment or activation system will need an updated privacy notice before it is introduced.
